Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

Viagra Connect is almost not possible, but the company is committed to making it less likely for men who do not seek help to do so than trying to do so.
Tests for liver-related side effects, such as men may need to be started on a low dose and stopping, could occur. They could also be caused by taking the medication even if the prescription is more than one of the recommended four treatment options.
A Pfizer statement also said that men can be sent for a full assessment to determine whether treatment is appropriate for the individual and assess their chance of getting a checkup by the first signs of infection.
No one is 100% clear on how many tablets can be sold, with the possibility of raising it from one low to a full succeeds. That said, several security firm offices have been telling Web developers and publisher states like the ones contained in this story that the figures given are very small.
But Tgirlstore's Sourial has noted that men in her firm couldn’t guarantee they would be taken with the Viagra Connect tablets.
In March of 2025, the UK-based pharmaceutical company Pfizer agreed to pay £7bn (£4.5bn) to settle patent litigation against its Viagra business, and to make up for lost royalties on the erectile dysfunction drug’s sales.
In order to avoid legal action by the Food and Drug Administration, Pfizer will be required to pay an upfront payment to the defence fund of the company, the Department of Justice and the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Centre (NIPRC).
In an interview, said that the agreement with Pfizer will allow the company to launch an “interim” patent application for the erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra, in mid-March. This will allow the company to introduce Viagra and the other three erectile dysfunction drugs to the UK market. The patent will run from March 2024.
Pfizer is not seeking a re-issue of the patent. The UK patent expires in April 2023.

However, Pfizer said that it had already set out to settle lawsuits brought by its customers about the health risks associated with the drug. The company has not yet set a date for that settlement.
In the US, Pfizer will pay out-of-pocket to patients who are eligible for the trial in the US. Patients who are eligible for trial in the US will need to pay between $10 to $50 for a month’s supply of the trial product. The trial product will be made available at pharmacies.
Pfizer also made a payment of $10 for each Viagra tablet and a $5 upfront payment. The company will also pay a further $10, for each additional tablet of Viagra, up to $100.

A federal judge on Wednesday dismissed the civil lawsuit filed against a former sexual enhancer maker after a jury found the company failed to adequately warn about the potential for sexual adverse effects in men taking the drug. The lawsuit alleges the company failed to properly disclose the risks of Viagra.
The suit claims the plaintiff did not properly warn about the risks of Viagra because the drug has been used for a number of years by men who have experienced sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction. The company also failed to warn consumers or health care providers of the possible increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
The suit alleges that in 2009, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration warned men not to use the drug because of the possible sexual side effects and advised them not to take the drug because of the increased risk of stroke. The FDA also warned the FDA that erectile dysfunction could be a warning sign of heart disease or diabetes, which could lead to heart attacks and strokes.
“It is important to note that sexual dysfunction can have an adverse effect on a man’s quality of life and negatively affect his ability to get or keep an erection,” Judge Michael L. Reitman said. “These findings were a failure to properly warn of the increased risk of sexual adverse effects and its association with heart disease.”
The plaintiff’s attorney, Michael A. Gass, argued in a letter to the judge that the company should have adequately disclosed the risk of cardiovascular events in patients taking the drug.
“The FDA is the authority behind this letter, and the U. Attorney’s Office is responsible for prosecuting this case. We believe the FDA has the authority to do what is best for the public,” Mr. Gass wrote in the letter.
Mr. Gass noted that the plaintiff’s lawsuit seeks damages for personal injury resulting from the company’s failure to warn about the risk of sexual adverse effects. The plaintiff’s attorney argued that the plaintiff should be allowed to recover damages for his wife’s loss of consortium.
The judge dismissed the lawsuit with prejudice.
